If you are struggling with your mental health, you are not alone. Our compassionate team at The Schulte Institute understands how depression can impact all aspects of life, and how difficult it can sometimes feel to find a treatment that works.

This is why we offer innovative, evidence-based treatments for depression and other mental health conditions when traditional treatments like medication prove ineffective. NeuroStar TMS Therapy is a treatment that could offer profound improvement in emotional regulation and overall quality of life. Let’s take a look at how Neurostar TMS Therapy in Scottsdale works.

How Does TMS Therapy Work?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is a non-invasive procedure that is FDA-cleared to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and anxious depression in adults aged 18 or older. It can also treat MDD in adolescents aged 15 and older. Neurostar Advanced Therapy is the TMS system that The Schulte Institute uses for treatment sessions that take place in our Scottsdale clinic.

It works by delivering electromagnetic pulses through the scalp to reactivate regions of the brain involved in mood control that may be underactive during episodes of depression. During a session, a small magnetic coil is placed against your scalp, where you may feel a tapping, tingling, or warming sensation. These effects are normal, typically mild, and should fade as you continue sessions. You are awake during the procedure, which means you do not need any downtime and can resume daily activities immediately after your appointment, including driving yourself home or back to work.

Clinically Backed Efficacy

Neurostar Advanced TMS Therapy is the #1 physician-approved TMS system offered and is backed by extensive clinical support. Based on available data, 83% of patients who completed a TMS course reported a significant reduction in depression symptoms, and 62% experienced a complete resolution in symptoms (Sackeim HA, et al. (2020). J Affective Disorders, 277(12):65-74.). This advanced treatment is FDA-cleared, meaning it has undergone extensive research to determine its safety and efficacy for most people with the previously mentioned conditions. Feeling Relief After Treatment

If you have tried antidepressant medication, you have likely endured long trial periods that bring common, unwanted side effects before finding out if the treatment works for you. Neurostar TMS Therapy works by offering significant relief to Scottsdale patients without the same long list of systemic side effects. While some may feel relief after their first TMS session, it is more common to feel a gradual shift in mood over time. Treatment plans typically consist of five sessions a week for seven weeks, with most patients noticing a meaningful reduction in depressive symptoms within four to six weeks of consistent treatment.

Neurostar TMS Therapy often produces results lasting up to 12 months (Dunner DL, et al. (2014). J Clin Psychiatry, 75(12):1394-1401). This makes it a great option if you have not felt relief from medication or are unable to tolerate them. Studies show that with every subsequent round of medication, the chances of remission from depressive symptoms decrease, and the chance of abandoning treatment due to intolerable side effects increases (Results from the STAR*D study, medication attempts (n=4,041), Trivedi (2006), Am J Psychiatry | Rush (2006), Am J Psychiatry | Fava (2006), Am J Psychiatry | McGrath (2006), Am J Psychiatry).

Important Safety Information

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
