TMS Therapy for Depression
Dr. Henry Schulte and Dr. Douglas Lakin discuss the benefits of TMS Therapy in the treatment of major depression.
For years, researchers have been seeking safe and effective treatments for depression, yet no single solution works for everyone. While antidepressant medications are commonly prescribed, alternative treatments are available for those who don’t respond to medications or experience unwanted side effects. One such option is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
TMS therapy uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain region that regulates mood. Also known as repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), this non-invasive treatment allows patients to remain awake and alert throughout the procedure.
TMS is typically administered as an outpatient treatment, with 5 sessions per week over a 7-week period, totaling 36 sessions. Each session lasts between 19 and 45 minutes, depending on the TMS prescription dose determined during the initial mapping with the provider.
Key benefits of TMS include:
- Non-invasive: No surgery, anesthesia, or sedation is required, and patients remain awake throughout the treatment.
- Non-systemic: TMS is not taken orally and does not circulate throughout the body.
- FDA-cleared: Proven effective for patients who have not found relief from previous antidepressant medications.
